At the beginning of February, more than 200 applicants who performed well in their baccalaureate examinations were shortlisted and interviewed. The selection process was led by MoEYS with full support from Prince Foundation members. Every year, the scholarship fortunes to 100 young Cambodians to amplify their potential resources to ensure the sustainability of Cambodia’s major sectors such as flourishing construction in the real estate sector, advancing financial inclusion and the digital economy in the banking and finance industries, and helping to promote world-class hospitality standards meeting the future human capital needs of the local economy. The recipients will be pursuing their education goals through reduced barriers and difficulties such as financial challenges in their academic journey. The scholarship program is a progressive initiative under the leadership of philanthropist Chen Zhi, Chairman of Prince Holding Group, in collaboration with MoEYS. Prince Group together with MoEYS ensure students get financial support, training, mentoring and work opportunities to bolster learning in three areas: sustainable development of the real estate sector advancing financial inclusion and the digital economy in the banking and finance industries, and the promotion of world class hospitality standards, meeting the future human capital needs of the local economy. The Fall 2021 semester will introduce the basics of mechanical timekeeping and students will learn how mechanical watches work. The Competition is open to all EPFL students. Skills include: mechanical engineering, industrial design, artistic expression and artisanship. This allows more room for students to express their creativity.
The Competition focuses on a specific watch mechanism in order to sidestep the difficult industrial aspects of making an entire working wristwatch. The tourbillon was invented in 1795 by Neuchatel born watchmaking Abraham-Louis Breguet in order to compensate the effect of gravity in pocket watches.
The tourbillon mechanism is synonymous with Haute Horlogerie, the most prestigious field in watchmaking. In order for EPFL students to get a glimpse of the watchmaking industry, groups of students will design and build a demonstrator of a complicated mechanical timekeeping device, the tourbillon, according to specifications laid out by our Instant-Lab team. The goal of the EPFL Horological Competition is to fill this gap by providing a venue for students to learn the fundamentals of mechanical watchmaking with an engineering approach combined with hands-on fabrication. Many EPFL graduates choose careers in this industry, yet the EPFL does not have any courses on the subject. Switzerland is well-known as the world leader of the watch industry and mechanical watchmaking its primary field of research and development.
